Heritage Month 2009 Grants
The theme Arkansas Heritage Month 2009 is “Only in Arkansas: Exploring Our Natural Heritage.” During the month of May 2009, Arkansans are invited to highlight the wonderful natural riches that exist only in Arkansas. From the lowlands to the uplands, from the Delta to the Ozarks, Arkansas is remarkably diverse and unique in its natural heritage. The Buffalo River comes to mind—the first National Scenic River, which is also the longest, free-flowing undammed river west of the Mississippi. Or Lake Chicot, the nation’s largest natural oxbow lake. More than one hundred species of plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world except here in Arkansas.
Let’s also include those unique marvels created by man, inspired by nature. Think about the pedestrian bridge spanning the Arkansas River in Little Rock, the longest structure of its kind. Picture the diamond mine near Murfreesboro, which is the only diamond mine in the world open to the public. And tune in to the longest-running blues radio show ever, still broadcast from Helena-West Helena. Who we are has a lot to do with where we are.
We invite all Arkansans to explore their communities and hometowns for natural sights and wonders that exist “only in Arkansas” and celebrate those during Heritage Month in May 2009.
Grants of up to $5,000 may be requested by non-profit organizations to support a project that reflects the Heritage Month theme. Beginning October 20, 2008, to request a grant application booklet that outlines all criteria and the grant selection process, write to the Heritage Month Grant Coordinator at DAH, 1500 Tower Building, 323 Center St., Little Rock, AR 72201; fax (501) 324-9154; email randy@arkansasheritage.org or download the application packet as a Word Document or PDF. No telephone requests, please.
Applications must be received in the Department of Arkansas Heritage office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008.
